Steph's story completely mirrors my own, it was such a relief when I realised there was a word for it. I've been cursed with working next to some incredibly loud eaters in the past and my co-workers would question why I'd put headphones on and 'ignore' them over lunch. Thanks for raising some awareness.
I'm glad Matt raised awareness too. My best friend has it, but her mom doesn't understand. I'm thinking of sending this to her. Matt and Steph have a way with explaining the subject that we lack.
In the New Grinch movie I thought he had PTSD because of when he sees certain items or hears certain words, he has a panic attack and starts hallucinating. The stress eating also helps this theory.
I always interpreted it as ADHD as I have this disorder I do get really sensitive around sounds like when I'm in school I get anxious as I can hear the buzzing of electricity or peoples breathing, that and the grinch gets very uncomfortable in large crowds or being at the center of attention another thing at least I experience with my ADHD
Maybe the narrator thought no one knew the reason because the Grinch never told anyone why before and the narrator first learned of the reason the same time we did.
OMG my family needs to hear this. SO BAD. Just the misophonia part. The "just get used to it" mentioned hits so at home. That's what they told me. They always called me overdramatic for covering my ears. Eventually I got into the habit of eating as fast as possible and "using the bathroom" where I just ran downstairs as soon as I was done and stayed there until it was all over. They were worried about the bathroom thing, never considering the fact that I couldn't just "get over" the sounds of a certain person eating. They didn't even put two and two together when I would remain at the table if that person wasn't there...
The only issue with Misophonia is that because we know so little, and it’s self diagnosis, many people misdiagnose themselves. No one likes the sound of chewing. These aren’t just minor annoyances. As someone who has a pretty bad case of misophonia it’s kinda frustrating. I had friend once who wouldn’t stop making one of my trigger sounds. I had asked him to stop, he didn’t. I wasn’t aware of misophonia at the time, but as Steph describes it, I got exponentially angerier. I couldn’t leave the situation. So I tried to stop the noise. I pinned him to the ground. I got in trouble of course and luckily we’re still friends and we are both aware of my misophonia. The entire ordeal took about 15 seconds. Edit: Sorry if this isn’t super coherent I’m pressed for time.
I think I might have misophonia myself. I HATE the sounds of snoring, knuckle cracking, and breathing. Knuckle cracking and joint dislocation also really disturb/gross me out.
When I heard her explanation of what Misophonia felt like. I started questioning if I had it, my sister's singing has always bothered me. Not because it was bad or anything, it just. Happened. I felt like covering my ears or going on my phone to stop her from singing, but whenever she started it felt annoying up to the point where I started crying because she wouldn't stop.
I have a theory idea: In the movie The Polar Express, the train has to get from each kids house (assuming they all live in different areas of the world) to the North Pole in one night (the conductor says near the beginning “tonight is Christmas Eve!”). So how fast would the train have to be going in order to get to the North Pole and back and drop off all those kids?? (There is a *VERY* slim chance you’ll even see and acknowledge this, so I’ll leave it up to the comment section)
This is a very good question. I wonder if its one train going extremely fast or dozens trains going slighty less fast cause lets me real unless you lived pretty far north it would be a long ride to the north pole. The train wasnt that big so there would have to be multiple polar expresses
The misophonia would explain the Grinch’s aversion to the noise. It would also explain the Grinch’s mini panic attack when he was in the middle of the tree lighting in the 2018 Grinch movie.
After hearing Steph talk about her experiences, I’m convinced I have misophonia as well. I had EXTREMELY similar reactions whenever I’d hear my grandfather eat. He was so loud and there was one day where he ate soup and the slurping noises were so intensely distressing to me I literally went to the bathroom to cry for 20 min. I couldn’t even finish my food that night. Over the years I have been able to *kind of* tune out other peoples eating sounds but not usually for very long, especially if they’re in close enough proximity to me. It’s a relief to know I wasn’t crazy for how I feel about these sounds and have been able to find a partner who does his best to avoid those noises when we eat together.
As someone who has misophonia, it’s not the repetitiveness of a sound that bothers me, it’s the type of sound that causes you to feel uncomfortable and have certain emotions. For me it was a soft noise like a whisper that would make me feel uncomfortable and angry, and sudden loud noises like flushing a loud toilet would trigger me for a few seconds. It’s hard to describe it, but a person with this has certain triggers that causes people to feel this way, and we don’t get to choose what those triggers are. Chewing doesn’t bother me at all even though it’s a repetitive sound
Stephanie describing misophonia is exactly how I feel when I hear an insect. That awful whining and buzzing sound has kept me awake/woken me up at night, caused me to literally run away in a panic if I'm out walking, cover my ears, etc. and it's not the fear of the insect itself - I don't care if there's a mosquito in my room, but as soon as I can hear it, I freak out. Even hearing someone else imitate it can make me anxious. So thank you - I think I learned something new about myself!
As a person with extreme mesophonia, hearing someone talk about it and spread the word is an amazing feeling. It’s really hard to deal with, so I’m glad to know I’m not the only one.
Same I have misophonia towards sight and sound and get triggered around 20 times a day I'm working with a therapist who specialises with misophonia at the moment to at least reduce it
yes!!! it is so incredibly hard to live with, everything makes me want to pull my eardrums out. i’ve spent so many years wondering if i could go deaf safely lol. but yeah it feels amazing to be recognized
The pandemic was physically painful for me because I was trapped in a house with my annoying parents and the noises they made nearly drove me to insanity.
Steph's description of misophonia reminds me a lot of my dad. He's really sensitive to eating noises too, and will often tell us to "stop chewing so loud". These comments were said to me most often whenever I ate something crunchy like chips, because it seems that, even when my mouth is closed, I'm the loudest eater. At least now I know I wasn't annoying dad moreso it's a sound sensitivity on his end.
I have Misophonia, and Stephanie's Rendition of it is Literally the best way to describe how we feel during these sensitivity responses. The ear covering impulse, playing music to attempt to cover it and feeling panicked and angry in the shortest amount of time. I am grateful that my family is very understanding and wearing headphones help a lot for me. Also family members who tend to ear louder sit farther away from me to help as well. Chewing noises are my major thing, but I actually wonder if I have other sensitivities to different sounds besides just chewing. I find if encouraging knowing there are others like me. I know this is an older film theory, but I just wanted to write all this out to hopefully help others.
I don't know if it is Misophonia, but I feel the same kind of impulse to cover my ears, feeling annoyed and eventually feeling really panicked and angry, when it comes to talking or music that is slightly louder than normal, but only after I already had some other irritant or slight stress, like having to solve a problem unexpectedly, or someone being annoying. Like I am happily doing work in a crowded place, I am very calm, then I am told to do something, but the person didn't explain it fully and there is basically no information to make an informed guess, and suddenly my ears tune in and I can hear everyone talking, and it won't stop, and I just want to cover my ears and leave, but I can't and I start panicking because it feels like I am surrounded by this terrible annoying noise and there is no escape and a sudden rush of anger gets over me. And just wanted to ask if it feels similar to your experiences ^^
@@dragonblast4854 it actually is very similar. Misophonia can be triggered very suddenly by stress as well. There are many times where these noises seem to happen and I pay them no mind, but other times it feels like they are the only thing I can hear. It's certain though that everyone with Misophonia experiences it differently. Whether it's different triggers or different responses altogether.
I get the same impulse to cover my ears, and I will turn up my music impossibly loud to cover up people talking. I also get very panicked and angry when it's loud, or crowded, or anything like that. The weirdest noises make me want to flip the table. I don't know if I have Misophonia, but I may bring it up with my grandmother because the comments and this video are making me think I likely do.
@@gamerninjask6746 an interesting fact is that many people without knowing it have a small form of Misophonia. Sounds like nails on a chalkboard for example many people commonly associate with anger and frustration. This is a small piece of Misophonia everyone has. Some like us though have it more often with common everyday things. Chewing is a common one, others have uncommon ones like Thunder for me.
Knowing that misophonia exists - and that I've not just been oversensitive at the most meaningless sounds - genuinely makes me feel a thousand times better. Definitely going to research more into it and see if I could talk to my doctor about it - Thank you MatPat and Stephanie for bringing this to light!!
Same here, actually. I live with a few dogs, and it infuriates me when they start snoring. The same thing happened when I was a kid and my little girl was an open-mouthed eater. Now I have a possible explanation for my wanting to punch a wall every time I hear snoring.
me and my dad always get so annoyed and mad at eachother when we eat bc of the sounds of eating, thats why we have to watch tv while we eat otherwise we get mad and i just run away lol, i just thought everyone was like that

I cannot guarantee this would be the case for all people with Misophonia, but my belief is that people who went through sevear trauma then get super sensitive around noises and anything else that reminds them of that awful situation. The inability to escape that noise then triggers all the feelings of anxiery and anger - because what we do with our lives is generally to try to escape anything that is similar to what has happend. It is possible that something happend when you were so young you have no memory of it, but your nervous system remembers all to well and panicks when it hears a sound that seems like it might happen again.
I agree. I’ve had Misophonia for 13 years since I was 10, I put together a time line and it occurred the same year I suffered a second head injury. It has gotten worse through my years of health trauma. I’m in a group for people with Misophonia and most of us do have some kind of trauma, mentally or physically

My sister has misophonia, but nobody in my family knew what it was before watching this. When I watched this I finally understood why she has extreme physical reactions to those types of noises, and after doing some research I now have a lot of info to use when defending her when my family yells at her for it. I can't believe the Whos. For years, not once did they think, "Hey, what if the Grinch has a heart disease which prevents him from enjoying christmas?". How insensitive
I have two favorite parts in How The Grinch Stole Christmas. 1. When he goes into town with max and he tells the two little kids to run with the saw 2. When he gets invited to the award thing ( I forgot what it was called ) and he gets dressed and he said "That's it I'm not going"
Really? I find his videos really entertaining and love the effort he puts into them, but his theories don't really make a lot of sense. This one for example, it can't be true seeing as the Grinch loves Christmas and noise by the end of the story.
Thank you, Film Theory. You and your wife just brought my 12 year old son to tears, in the best way. He has loved your videos for a long time and was recently diagnosed with Misphonia (just as he entered junior high, great timing, right?) This video, from a creator he enjoys, was incredibly validating and informative. Thank you Thank you thank you, more than i could ever say. ❤❤❤
God I'm so glad someones talking about how bad Misophonia is. It gets in the way on everyday tasks, it interrupts school, and it's still not recognized as a "real" condition. I'm glad to know theres so many other people that understand the struggle.
@@geeks3042 It's bad, but as someone with a bad case of misophonia myself I can say that there is definitely worse... also, this might not just be a misophonia thing, but sometimes hearing certain people talk makes me want to actually slap them because their voices are so annoying and loud... I live with 4 other people and have no space to work anywhere but the livingroom of my family's house so you can probably tell that this is so annoying
well there is another condition that could explain, hyper acusis hyper acusis is like what matpat says but instead of certain sounds bringing feelings it just makes noises louder,
@Robin The God - Fake ASMR Is Being Stupid Idk about misophobia, but misophonia is absolutely a real thing. And screw you for dismissing Steph's lived experience.
The one thing that debunks this theory is on Christmas morning, when the Grinch had stolen all the stuff, he listens for the sad sounds of the Whos. Instead he hears singing and church bells. He realizes that he can't stop Christmas by stealing all the Whos Christmas things because Christmas is just about all the mushy heartfelt stuff associated with the season. His heart grows three sizes, learns the error of his ways, and celebrates Christmas with the Whos, not stopping the noise at all.

I’ve had Misophonia for 13 years and this video makes me so happy that he acknowledges how real Misophonia is! I discovered it’s a real thing from another RUclipsr when I was 13, that’s how I knew I wasn’t crazy and the name of this disorder. I cried and was so happy! It’s a terrible disorder but knowing we’re not crazy definitely makes it better. Our brains are literally wired differently causing these flight or fight reactions
I remember the first time I watched this, and hearing misophonia described, and realizing, "Hey! Those sorts of things are things that drive me nuts, too!" For me, it also seems to extend into seeing certain actions as well (or maybe that's something different).
There actually is another disorder similar to misophonia but for visual triggers. I don't know too much about and I don't remember what it's called, but I saw it on a site that talked about misophonia so I might recommend doing some of your own research. It does happen to me, for instance, one of my misophonia triggers is chewing, so now I can't even see people chewing without having that kind of a reaction.

Along with your OCD, misophonia, and ADHD, it sounds like you have a classic case of 'justify my action with very popular and very convenient disorders'
Well for the question of "Have I learned an Instrument growing up?", yes, I have. I played violin and piano. Still am playing Piano nowadays, but mostly during family outings :3 Misophonia is not funny. I have that and my little sister has it. Two out of 8 children in our family and two out of five from our entire family tree even. I have Misophonia for noises connected to scraping on metal. Most intense with Stone scraping over metal, like when you cut rock with a rock cutter blade. I came to this when I was 18 years old and had to go abroad for studying in Art. Our classroom was across from a shed for a sculpturing class, which used these sort of machines all the time and it was painful. Even when all windows were closed I could hear the noise getting louder in the back of my head. It got to the point were I battled myself through a class once and passed out in the middle of it, due to the stress. My sister's Misophonia is the same as Stephanie's. She hates eating noises, even her own. She gets really mad and angry about it, even though she is an Anti-social, anxiety filled bag that battles with fits of depression. She never gets angry at all, unless it really upsets her. She shrugs off insults, critiques and harassment like a brick wall, but try eating chips in her vicinity and she will take the closest leap out of there. It's one of the things that is just fascinating yet so aggravating. Especially when nobody believes you have it at all. One of the issues me and my sister faced for 10 years straight, before I got so fed up with it that I got us both to a doctor who diagnosed us with it, finally.
I can't agree less. I never enjoyed anything. I hated loud noises cause they make me feel irritated. Like if I'm interrupted or overruled I'd get very aggressive because. Its MY TIME TO TALK. You don't get the audacity nor the gall to talk quietly. I'm talking so RESPECT should be given. Now I known why I have a furious Hatred against humanity.
@@justhuxley4355 I hate humanity for the noise they had to produce out of instincts for pety things. If they can't resolve such problems. They should just die so they don't have to suffer such problems.
@@evak1948 why can't he have misophonia and PTSD? We honestly don't even need a theory to know that he has PTSD. They make it inherently obvious. They do so with misophonia as well, but it's a lesser known disorder. Which is why we needed someone to tell us. Suggesting that he has PTSD is not saying that this is wrong.
I have misophonia and the hardest part for me personally is i hate getting angry at other people about it because its not really in their control that very common and simplistic sounds make me want to scream and rip out my hair so i end up getting really angry at myself for being “unreasonable” for being in pain which honestly just worsens the problem and makes me more snappy to others in a horrible spiral of emotions. Usually i just silently remove myself from situations where thats happening (meals, people kissing, drumming session, bell ringing, etc) and for the longest time people were offended that i didnt want to eat with them or play music with them or would randomly leave when people started kissing and i really had no way of explaining what the problem was because i didnt *know* what the problem was all i knew was the sound hurt and was so unbearably uncomfortable that sometimes it made me actually scream or cry if i tried to just stick it out. I have other sensory sensitivities though and once i realized those werent normal i chalked those up together in the same category, but while most other sensory sensitivity i have hurts or makes me horribly uncomfortable and upset, its really only those repetitive noises that makes me so irrationally angry.
I’m really late but I just wanted to say that it feels awesome to have people talk about misophonia. I don’t have a very severe case but the one thing that really triggers me is people immediate reaction to telling them it’s making me uncomfortable is to just do it on purpose to “be funny”. If you know someone who has it and asks you to stop, please listen!

I have misophonia too! It really sucks sometimes especially because my best friend is the loudest chewer I’ve ever known. Sometimes I’ll ask someone to stop making a certain sound (like scratching one of those plastic folders) and they’ll just do it more because they think it’s funny
Actually, the quieter stuff is more annoying for me, whispering and stuff just makes me angry and frustrated, I can usually deal with loud stuff but quiet sounds are way worse
I can just imagine someone having this and saying "So there are people that eat like an Alligator with no teeth and an unhinged jaw and I'M the one with the disorder?"
Thats exactly what its like honestly. Imagine Stephanies description, but amplify the anger to borderline berserker rage. All because people refuse to close their mouth and eat small reasonable amounts at a time.
I wonder if you can acquire a milder form of misophonia later in life. In my early college years, I had this small wooden clock that would constantly tick. Eventually for some reason, I wouldn't be able to filter out the ticking noise and got so annoyed that I just of rid of it...nowadays sometimes I become too consciously aware of my own heartbeat. But apparently that might be some form of sensori-motor OCD which could also explain why I often become consciously aware and distracted by my own breathing. Maybe there's some link between misophonia and sensori-motor OCD...

I got in trouble of course and luckily we’re still friends and we are both aware of my misophonia. The entire ordeal took about 15 seconds.
Edit: Sorry if this isn’t super coherent I’m pressed for time.

The misophonia would explain the Grinch’s aversion to the noise. It would also explain the Grinch’s mini panic attack when he was in the middle of the tree lighting in the 2018 Grinch movie.
Omg I was thinking the same thing!!

As a person who has misophonia I’m honestly glad there’s someone spreading awareness to it and the fact of how many problems it causes❤

I don't know if I have Misophonia, but I may bring it up with my grandmother because the comments and this video are making me think I likely do.
i have misophinia, chewing just angers me, but for some reason material that is used for outside of pencilcases is just torture
Same. It totally clicked for me man
Same here, actually. I live with a few dogs, and it infuriates me when they start snoring. The same thing happened when I was a kid and my little girl was an open-mouthed eater. Now I have a possible explanation for my wanting to punch a wall every time I hear snoring.
@Hellp my brother also snored. I threw a blanket on his face on more than one occasion. It almost immediately woke him up, so he was fine.

It does happen to me, for instance, one of my misophonia triggers is chewing, so now I can't even see people chewing without having that kind of a reaction.

Well for the question of "Have I learned an Instrument growing up?", yes, I have.
I played violin and piano. Still am playing Piano nowadays, but mostly during family outings :3
Misophonia is not funny.
My mom absolutely DESPISES Christmas! The only remotely holiday activity she enjoys is watch the Grinch, and she so happens to have misophonia!

I love that this was sneakily a very personal episode and raised awareness for a lesser known disorder.

My family threats to do it to me all the time like it’s funny!! I literally hate living with people that don’t take it seriously😭

I don't have misophonia, but I understand how it feels when someone says something like that. I remember watching a video where someone was explaining what misophonia was, and immediately started making noises that would most likely trigger a lot of people with misophonia. People should just take some things more seriously.
I dont have misophonia but i have something pretty similar called censory processing disorder where ceratin sounds and texture cause physical pain and cause me to be very angry, and im a pretty mellow person. So i can relate to this very well.
I’d never even heard of someone who had misophonia until this video and it made me really happy. I’m so glad awareness is being spread and I hope it helps people (I recently met another person with it for the first time and we’ve bonded over it)
Noodle cat… It’s a self diagnosable condition. You might have. In fact I’d go as far as to say you do have it. I’m stuck on your name so you’re getting off the hook for now. I have it. Now you have heard of someone who has it.
@@jefferyhorton5251 yup, I do have it! I’ve known for several years. It’s a huge struggle but I’d never met someone else with it until right before I posted the comment, and it was nice to see other people in the world with it. I felt not so alone. That’s all. I also don’t know how you gathered from my comment that I had it with such certainty, as I didn’t release that much info, but oh well.
Yea, I figured he probably had some sort of hearing sensitivity for a while. Nothing can really explain the pure fear, panic, and anger you fear, and most people think you're being an extremely overdramatic assholes. You can't breathe, you can't think, your only thought is "make it stop!"
That sounds awful...I guess this is why need to have empathy for people, even when from an outside perspective they’re acting weird. Now that I’m a little more educated about this, I’ll try to be more understanding with people

Weeeeeeeĺlllllllllllllll that's a lot of words
Interesting
As someone with misophonia, I believe, yes. I didnt get misophonia until is was about 9 (still not as long as you, but it's not an at birth thing (usually))triggers can come in many different ways, and they usually happen when you hear a noise repeatedly. There are theories it is from trauma, but I personally dont know about tha ft.
